Laura is the Lead Practice Nurse for Primary Care

This time, we caught up with Laura to discover how she chose the path she is on today.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your current role.

I’m the Group Lead Practice Nurse. That means I provide support and training to the practice nurse, I upskill junior nurses, provide supervision, and do a lot of work around chronic disease and long-term condition management. I also look at new ways of working to improve access and patient care.

One of the biggest parts of my job at the moment is looking enhanced services we can deliver, a lot of which is delivered by Practice Nurses – things like vaccinations and immunisations, long-acting reversible contraception, and the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF).

When did you start working at OneMedical Group?

I came for an eight-week placement when I was a Student Nurse in 2014. I fell in love with practice nursing and stayed here while I finished my studies. Following that, I became Lead Nurse at one of our surgeries and from there, Group Lead Practice Nurse.

What do you like most about your job now?

Transitioning from a fully clinical role into a senior leadership role was definitely a change. I still have clinical time and feel like I have the best of both worlds: I get to keep doing hands-on patient care, whilst also looking at new ways of working and implementing changes. I’m so glad I can keep working with patients; I could never have left that behind completely.

I love travelling to all the different sites and meeting lots of colleagues. I feel like I’m a part of lots of different teams, which is really nice. There’s so much variety.

What’s your proudest achievement at work?

I’m most proud of doing my prescribing qualification. It’s great to have enhanced my skills in that way, and I love having the independence of not having to knock on a GP’s door every time I need a prescription. The first time I signed a prescription was a moment where I thought, “Wow! I’m actually a prescriber!”

The Group supported me to complete my prescribing qualification with study leave and other help. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without that support.

What other training have you done during your time with the Group?

I’ve done absolutely everything! I’ve done coils and implants training, and all my long-term conditions diplomas. I’ve just started a master’s in Healthcare Leadership, with funding support from the Group. It’ll take two years to complete and is about change management, leadership and behaviours.
