Challenge
Dermatology services face increasing demand across the NHS, while opportunities for specialist dermatology training within primary care can be limited. At the same time, there is a growing need to support the development of future clinicians, enhance dermatology knowledge among healthcare professionals, and provide high-quality educational experiences that inspire careers in the specialty.
OneMedical Group recognised the importance of investing in education at every level, from medical students and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) to GPs with Extended Roles (GPwERs), helping to build a more confident and capable workforce for the future.
What we did
Working in partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds, our community dermatology team has welcomed third-year medical students as part of their dermatology training rotation since March 2025. Students attend one day per week, gaining hands-on experience within a community dermatology setting while learning from experienced clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
Since launching the programme, more than 100 medical students have completed placements with our service. Alongside clinical knowledge, students are supported to develop professionalism, communication skills and an understanding of high-quality patient-centred care.
Beyond undergraduate education, we have established a bi-monthly educational forum for local GPwERs. These sessions provide opportunities for learning, service updates, consultant-led teaching and professional networking, creating a collaborative environment for dermatology practitioners across the region.
Our clinicians have also delivered a wide range of educational talks and presentations at local and national events, including sessions in partnership with the Primary Care Dermatology Society and the British Dermatological Nursing Association. Over the last 12 months, more than 400 clinicians, including over 50 ACPs, have attended these events, helping to address identified training needs and improve confidence in dermatological diagnosis and management.
Impact / Results
The programme has received consistently positive feedback from students, education partners and clinicians.
More than 100 medical students have completed community dermatology placements with OneMedical Group since March 2025, with feedback highlighting the quality of teaching, clinical exposure and support provided by the team.
One student commented:
"Dr Jamieson is an excellent teacher and taught us a variety of dermatological conditions with sufficient detail and practical knowledge. Despite having a busy schedule, she made sure to include us and involve us in examinations. I left with a newfound interest in dermatology, especially community dermatology, which I would never have considered before."
The Undergraduate Medical School team also recognised the contribution of the service, stating:
"On behalf of the student and the Medical School as a whole, thank you for the teaching and other support that you provide our students."
Dr A Goyal, Dermatology Clinical Lead, highlighted the collective effort behind the programme:
"We are receiving excellent feedback on our medical student education placements from both students and the Undergraduate Training Programme Director at LTHT. I think it's a reflection of our whole team ethos on ensuring medical students have a positive experience and good learning."
Our GPwER education forums continue to receive excellent engagement and feedback, with attendees describing sessions as "super interesting and helpful" and valuing the opportunity to learn from consultant dermatologists while strengthening professional networks.
Meanwhile, educational events delivered by our dermatology clinicians have reached more than 400 healthcare professionals, helping to increase dermatology knowledge and confidence across primary care settings.
Conclusion
Education is a core part of our dermatology service. By investing in medical students, supporting the development of primary care clinicians and creating opportunities for ongoing learning, OneMedical Group is helping to strengthen the future dermatology workforce.
Through collaborative partnerships, expert-led teaching and a commitment to professional development, we are not only delivering high-quality patient care today but helping to shape the dermatology specialists, GPs and advanced practitioners of tomorrow.
